our National Flower in South Africa, is among one of the oldest flowers in the world, dating back 300 million years . They named the protea after Proteus, the son of Poseidon, due to his ability to shapeshift . Much like the protea takes on various different forms. The San people know the King protea for its medical purposes and use it for their natural healing abilities. In the Western Cape, 120 different species of protea exist , of which 83 are found only in South Africa.
